The Houston Rockets have extended the contract of GM Daryl Morey through the 2012-2013 season.
The Rockets have retooled and remained competetive under Morey's direction but may face serious challenge this season with Yao Ming out and Tracy McGrady coming off of microfracture surgery.

Yao Ming admitted on Wednesday that he won't play in the 2009-10 season due to surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his left foot.
"The (X-ray) picture looks good. The bones heal well," Yao said. But when asked if he'd play this season, the news wasn't positive. "The answer is no. You don’t want to rush it, because they want it to totally heal this time. I have been in this situation enough," he said. Yao has also hinted that he's going to have to "slow down" in order to prolong his career. Luis Scola should have a big season in Yao's absence.

Rockets GM Daryl Morey said recently that Yao Ming could return during the 2009-2010 season, and the franchise no longer feels his broken left foot is career-threatening.
"They have not actually ruled out [his return] this season," said Morey. "I think that's less likely than likely, but they haven't ruled it out." Yao still needs to wear a cast for a few weeks, after which he'll be on crutches for 6-to-8 weeks. Given all the uncertainty and his history of injuries, fantasy owners should still avoid him on draft day.

Chinese officials confirmed recently that they won't attempt to make injured star Yao Ming play for the national basketball team.
"He is injured, this is a fact," said Vice Minister of Sports Cui Dalin. Dalin didn't stop there, however, going on to blame Yao's injury on the fact that "he played over 100 games in a row in the NBA...the Houston head coach played him too much, so he was injured." Yep, it's Rick Adelman's fault.

The lack of off-season moves by the Houston Rockets may be an indication that they are holding out hope for a return of Yao Ming.
It seems the Rockets are reluctant to blow up the roster, an admission that Yao is a lost cause, but they don't have room to sign a major free agent without unloading a significant number of contracts. Regardless, Yao's likelihood of returning this season is slim.

Yao Ming underwent a pair of successful surgeries on his left foot on Tuesday.
One procedure repaired the hairline fracture, while the other realigned the bones in his foot. The realignment flattened Yao’s arch to reduce the stress on the bone. "Everything went according to plan," Dr. Tom Clanton said. There's still no timetable on his return, other than that the Rockets are hoping he'll be ready for training camp a year from now.
