49ers coach Mike Singletary confirmed Wednesday that Brian Westbrook (hamstring) will be available for Week 1.

Westbrook, signed August 16, has barely practiced in Jimmy Raye's offense, suffering a hamstring cramp that cost him the preseason finale. Rookie Anthony Dixon has established himself as a better handcuff for Frank Gore, though Westbrook holds more stand-lone value as the 49ers' change-up runner.

Brian Westbrook is "day to day" after coming out of Saturday's preseason game with a hamstring cramp.

Westbrook spent his entire Eagles career as "day to day." Why should that change now that he's in San Francisco? This doesn't sound like an injury serious enough to drag into the regular season, but fantasy leaguers aren't drafting him to start in Week 1 regardless.

49ers RB Brian Westbrook is expected to play in Saturday night's game against the Raiders.

Westbrook dressed in Sunday night's game against the Vikings, but didn't see any action. He will be making his 49ers debut.

Brian Westbrook was dressed in full pads for Sunday night's preseason game against the Vikings, but did not play.

Anthony Dixon handled the vast majority of the workload, carrying 20 times for 50 yards and a touchdown with three receptions for eight yards. Westbrook will likely pass Dixon to be Frank Gore's "change of pace" before Week 1, but Gore doesn't have a clear-cut handcuff. Dixon will be heavily involved -- and perhaps even start -- if Gore misses regular season time.

49ers OC Jimmy Raye said Wednesday that Brian Westbrook will not be handed the No. 2 running back job over Anthony Dixon.

"It's not an open-and-closed deal," Raye said. "Anthony Dixon is very much in the running for vying for time at that position as the guy who goes in and replaces (Frank) Gore." Westbrook will likely open the season as No. 2, but Dixon could be the favorite for early-down carries if Gore goes down. There's no way the brittle Westbrook could hold up on 20 touches per game.

The Cowboys were one of the teams that showed interest in Brian Westbrook this offseason, according to the Dallas Morning News.

This appears to have its roots in an AP report from last week that, perhaps mistakenly, listed the Cowboys along with the Rams as interested parties. It would've been hard to seen any role for Westbrook in Dallas. They don't have enough snaps as it is for Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice.
