The Browns won't release suspended wide receiver Donte' Stallworth because the cap hit would be too costly.
They'd take a $7.6 million hit. Commissioner Roger Goodell's one-year suspension of Stallworth actually did the Browns a favor, as they're no longer on the hook for his $745,000 base salary. Still, he could easily be cut once his suspension is up. Stallworth's salary jumps to $1.5 million in 2010.

Coach Eric Mangini didn't hint one way or the other whether the Browns would release Donte' Stallworth, who was suspended for the 2009 season today.
"There's really no decision that's been made. We're focused on what we have to do here, the players that are here, that's the direction we are headed," said Mangini. It would be surprising to see Stallworth ever wearing a Browns jersey again.

The NFL has suspended Donte Stallworth for the 2009 season.
Any other outcome would have been surprising. Some want Commissioner Goodell to suspend Stallworth for life after his felony manslaughter guilty plea, but that seems unlikely. Stallworth probably won't ever play for the Browns again, and his age and talent level don't guarantee that he'll get a job next year anyway, assuming he's reinstated.

A Florida judge has allowed indefinitely suspended Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth to work with a conditioning coach once he's released from jail to home confinement.
It's probably all for naught. His odds of playing in 2009 seem slim to none after he killed a pedestrian in the roadway while driving drunk, then tested positive for marijuana. The Browns certainly aren't counting on him.

Donte' Stallworth is back in Miami Tuesday, attempting to have his DUI manslaughter sentence reduced.
Stallworth has served 24 days of his 30-day jail sentence. It's the two years of "community control" and eight years of probation that he's challenging. He's expected to receive a ruling this afternoon.

Donte' Stallworth has issued a statement after meeting with Roger Goodell on Wednesday.
"I exercised poor judgment and have caused irreparable harm to Mario Reyes, his family, and the NFL," said Stallworth. "Whatever he (Goodell) ultimately decides is the appropriate discipline...I am truly sorry."
