Patriots CB Shawn Springs confirmed late Wednesday that he is not planning to retire after all.
"Nah, I don't think so. I still got a lot to play for," he said. "Even If I was I would not just announce it on TV like that. I would consult with some people first." While he may not be a starter in 2010, Springs' return is good news for the Patriots. He still matches up well with big wide receivers.

 Shawn Springs-DB - Patriots Jan. 27 - 1:18 pm et

Patriots CB Shawn Springs indicated Wednesday that he may consider calling it a career this offseason.
"I actually feel like I can still play a lot, so I don’t know yet," he said. "I’m taking my time. I think every player should." Springs, who turns 35 in March, added a late-season spark to New England's back end when he moved into the starting lineup at left corner. He finished with 39 tackles and a pick.

Shawn Springs, who's been inactive much of the season, started Sunday's game at left cornerback for the Patriots.
New England has shuffled LCBs all season, with Jonathan Wilhite and Darius Butler also starting games there. Springs appeared to be burned on Steve Smith's 41-yard touchdown, although SS Brandon Meriweather was at fault for biting on a play-action fake. Springs finished with three tackles.

 Fred Taylor-RB - Patriots Dec. 5 - 8:02 pm et

The Patriots have downgraded RB Fred Taylor, WR Julian Edelman, CB Shawn Springs, OT Sebastian Vollmer, and S Bret Lockett to out for Week 13.
Taylor did some practicing on Friday, but was never expected to suit up against the Dolphins. He may return on a limited basis in Week 14 against the Panthers. Edelman's absence means Sam Aiken will be the Pats' No. 3 receiver. Matt Light has regained his starting left tackle job from Vollmer.

Shawn Springs was a healthy scratch in the Week 10 loss to the Colts.
Springs, 34, was expected to be the team's No. 1 corner when he signed a three-year deal last April. But the emergence of Jonathan Wilhite across from Leigh Bodden has turned Springs into a bystander. To his credit, Springs didn't complain about his demotion. "Man, whatever coach decides is best for the team at the moment," Springs said.

 Leigh Bodden-DB - Patriots Oct. 30 - 7:38 pm et

The Patriots are using a rare four-man rotation at cornerback this season, with Leigh Bodden playing the most.
Bodden has played 75% of the snaps, while Jonathan Wilhite plays second most (66%) and rookie Darius Butler (55) is third. Shawn Springs brings up the rear at 49%. The plan has worked, as New England ranks fifth against the pass and isn't giving up nearly as many big plays as last year's secondary.
