Shaun Hill does not figure into the Niners' plans as a starting quarterback again, sources tell beat writer Matt Maiocco.
This is Alex Smith's job for the foreseeable future. The team is going to give him a chance to be their "quarterback of the future" and they see Hill as a strict backup. No. 3 QB Nate Davis is nowhere close to seeing the field.

Shaun Hill has been demoted behind Alex Smith on the 49ers' quarterback depth chart.
Hill led a stagnant passing "attack" in the first five and a half games, one that was easily game planned against by stacking eight in the box with no long-ball threat. His 6.1 YPA and 56.1 completion rate both rank 27th among QBs, and Hill has taken 18 sacks (tied for fifth most). Drop him in all leagues, though Smith is prone to injury. We wouldn't rule out seeing Hill again in '09.

49ers coach Mike Singletary said in his post-game press conference that he is undecided about who his starting QB will be going forward.
Alex Smith earned the job by generating 21 second-half points at Houston, and Singletary's refusal to commit isn't a good sign for Shaun Hill. Smith didn't take a sack Sunday, while Hill took two in the first two quarters and posted a miserable QB rating of 64.6. A decision is expected on Monday.

Alex Smith completed 15-of-22 passes for 206 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in the 49ers' Week 7 loss to the Texans. He also ran twice for 16 yards.
Smith nearly engineered a comeback win after replacing Shaun Hill at the half, so the decision on who to start in Week 8 shouldn't be hard for coach Mike Singletary. Smith was poised and efficient, throwing with accuracy and showing good arm strength. The 49ers head to Indianapolis next Sunday, so Hill will have a much tougher test in Week 8 should he grab the starting job.

The 49ers emerged from halftime of Sunday's game against the Texans with Alex Smith at quarterback. Shaun Hill was 6-of-11 passing for 45 yards in the first half.
The overrated 49ers were down 21-0, so Mike Singletary is trying to shake things up. Eventually, he and Jimmy Raye will have to realize that such a decidedly run-heavy offense won't work at this level. Smith immediately led San Francisco on a touchdown drive, hooking up with Vernon Davis for the score, and had more yards in two throws than Hill did in the first two quarters. The Niners figure to pass for the rest of the game. For the season, Hill's YPA stands at 6.1.

49ers coach Mike Singletary critcized Shaun Hill for the first time this season Wednesday.
"Shaun Hill knows he has got to do a better job, and he will. ... Right now, we feel Shaun Hill is the guy," Singletary said. That sparked speculation that Alex Smith could be inching closer to the first chair. Hill is 24th in the league in passer rating, but it's still unlikely Singletary would go to Smith anytime soon.
