 Kurt Warner-QB- CardinalsJan. 29 - 3:03 pm et
Kurt Warner announced his retirement from football Friday, as expected.
Warner's career will go down as one of the most unique in NFL history. He famously went from stocking shelves at a grocery story while playing in the Arena league to becoming one of only two quarterbacks in history to lead two different franchises to the Super Bowl. The two-time NFL MVP escaped a five-year drought in the middle of his career to own the three highest single-game passing totals in Super Bowl history. Though it may not be on the first ballot, the 12-year veteran sharpshooter will end up with a bust and a mustard-colored jacket in Canton, Ohio.

 Kurt Warner-QB - Cardinals Jan. 28 - 11:46 am et

Updating a previous item, Kurt Warner has been in contact with the Cardinals and has kept them up-to-date on his plans for Friday's press conference.
Warner is fully expected to announce his retirement from football at the 3:00 p.m. ET press conference Friday. The Cardinals will turn the offense over to Matt Leinart, whose salary increases from $2.5M in 2010 to $7.4M in 2011 with a $5.5M roster bonus. Leinart will have one year to prove he can handle the job for the leading NFC West contender.

Despite scheduling a news conference for Friday, Kurt Warner has yet to inform the Cardinals of his future plans.
The Arizona Republic confirms that Warner "is expected" to retire, and it would be even more diva-like than Brett Favre for the 38-year-old to hold a press conference announcing his return. We'll know for sure by week's end.

A league source tells CBS Sports' Clark Judge that Kurt Warner won't necessarily declare his retirement at Friday's press conference.
"My understanding," the source said, "is that (Warner) could go in either direction." It's unlikely that the club would call a presser for Warner to declare he's coming back, or simply to "update" Warner's situation. Both ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL.com's Jason La Canfora expect Warner to retire.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Cardinals have scheduled a Friday press conference to address Kurt Warner's future.
According to Schefter, "all signs point" toward Warner hanging 'em up. His retirement would leave Matt Leinart as the Cardinals' only quarterback under contract for 2010; third-stringer Brian St. Pierre is a free agent. Warner, who turns 39 in June, finished the 2009 season with a 66.1 completion rate, 26:14 TD-to-INT ratio, and 3,753 passing yards. He indicated to ESPN's Rick Reilly last week that playing football had lost its fun.

Sounding like a player dead-set on retiring, Kurt Warner told ESPN's Rick Reilly that playing football has lost its fun.
"You have a game that isn't that great and people are like, 'What's wrong with Warner?' That wears on you," Warner said. "You don't have the joy and the fun and satisfaction of having one of those great games because everybody expects you to. You never get to exhale." Warner, who turns 39 in June, has been named NFL MVP twice, played in three Super Bowls, and made a strong case for Hall-of-Fame enshrinement. Reilly, for what it's worth, came away from the interview convinced Warner is done.
