The Saints worked out free agent DL Paul Spicer and Rodrique Wright in the past week.
The Saints are suddenly thin at the DT spot after injuries to Sedrick Ellis and Kendrick Clancy. Spicer was with the Saints all offseason and the Saints were likely just seeing what kind of shape he was in. Another option for the Saints is to promote DeMario Pressley from the practice squad.

Free agent DL Paul Spicer is visiting the Lions on Tuesday.
The Lions need the defensive line help after Mike Bell gashed them for 143 yards in the opener. The 34-year-old Spicer had a solid season in 2007 but fell apart last year.

Spicer played for Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams in Jacksonville, but that wasn't enough. At 34, Spicer's career may be in trouble.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune suggests that Paul Spicer's addition could cost DTs Brian Young or Hollis Thomas a roster spot.
This also indicates that Spicer could be used at defensive tackle. Thomas is New Orleans' only true two-gap clogger, so he'd seem more safe. Injuries have cost Young 15 games over the last two years and he turns 32 in July.

Saints agreed to terms with DE Paul Spicer on a one-year contract.
Spicer, 34 in August, played for new Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams in Jacksonville last year. Spicer can still stop the run and function on early downs, but he has very little left as a pass rusher. The Saints needed depth because LE Charles Grant may start the season on suspension.

The Saints are showing interest in free agent DE Paul Spicer and C Nick Leckey.
Both would be signed as backups. Spicer could back up multiple positions on the defensive line, while Leckey would play behind Jonathan Goodwin at center.
