Weak-side linebacker Mike Peterson was impressive in his Falcons debut.

Peterson, 33, had seven tackles to go along with a forced fumble and a interception against the Dolphins. The Falcons forced four turnovers after getting just 18 takeaways all of last season.

Stephen Nicholas ran as the Falcons' starting strong-side linebacker at minicamps over the weekend.

As Mike Boley learned last year, the starting SAM 'backer in Mike Smith's defense isn't setup for heavy IDP production. Mike Peterson would be a better bet for stats on the weak side, but his physical decline began years ago.

Mike Peterson will get the first shot at replacing Keith Brooking as the Falcons' starting weak-side linebacker.

In an ideal world the Falcons will find a better option in the draft. Peterson, 33, would be best utilized as a versatile fourth LB at this stage.

Falcons agreed to terms with LB Mike Peterson on a two-year contract.

Peterson played for Mike Smith in Jacksonville and knows the scheme, but the 33-year-old has declined badly the past two seasons and would probably fit best in a versatile backup role. For now, Peterson figures to be penciled in on the weak side, with Stephen Nicholas and Coy Wire competing opposite him. Outside linebacker remains a major need area in Atlanta.

The Falcons will host free agent LB Mike Peterson later this week.

Atlanta is thin outside linebacker after letting Keith Brooking and Michael Boley leave in free agency. Peterson, who was previously with coach Mike Smith in Jacksonville, can play in the middle and on the weak side.

Free agents LB Mike Peterson and DE Jason Babin visited with the Bills on Friday.

Peterson, 33, would likely start in the middle next to Paul Posluzny. Babin is a journeyman at this stage of his career. He'd likely battle for a roster spot.
