The Texans are expected to pick up Matt Schaub's $10 million option on Thursday or Friday.

Owner Bob McNair announced his intention to pick up Schaub's option a month ago, and the MVP-winning performance in the Pro Bowl may have accelerated the move. After joining the league's elite quarterbacks in performance this season, Schaub's six-year, $48M deal is outdated.

Matt Schaub-QB - Texans

Matt Schaub was named the MVP of the Pro Bowl after leading the AFC to a 41-34 win.

Schaub went 13-of-17 for 189 yards with two touchdowns passes -- one to teammate Andre Johnson and another to Brandon Marshall. After leading the NFL in passing yards and playing in all 16 games in 2009, Schaub will be on everyone's fantasy radar heading into fantasy drafts. He'll deservedly be one of the first five quarterbacks off the board.

Texans Offense-TM - Texans

Texans hired former Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp as quarterbacks coach.

It's a step back for Knapp, who has been a run-heavy offensive coordinator since 2001. With Gary Kubiak's expertise coming in the passing game, the Texans can afford to have both Knapp and new offensive coordinator Rick Dennison steeped in a zone-blocking ground attack. Knapp does have a history with Matt Schaub, working with him for three years in Atlanta as offensive coordinator.

Tom Brady-QB - Patriots

Tom Brady has pulled out of the Pro Bowl.

Brady's surgically repaired knee was the concern entering the season, but by year's end his finger, shoulder, and ribs were bigger problems. It's not a surprise that he'll rest instead of playing in Miami. Brady was replaced on the AFC roster by Matt Schaub, who led the league with 4,770 passing yards.

Andre Johnson-WR - Texans

Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson became the first teammates since 1998 to lead the league in passing yards and receiving yards.

Johnson also became the second receiver in history to lead the league in yards for consecutive seasons, joining Jerry Rice. Schaub's 4,770 yards were the sixth-highest total in history as the offense set team records for points (388) and yards gained (6,129).

Texans owner Bob McNair confirmed Sunday that the team will exercise Matt Schaub's $10 million option bonus this offseason.

While the move is a no-brainer, McNair is clearly swimming after his franchise clinched its first winning season. The Texans will miss the playoffs following Sunday night's Jets win, but McNair has also committed to keeping Gary Kubiak in 2010. Schaub, though, is underpaid at this point on his six-year, $48 million contract. Coming off the first 16-game of his career, a case can be made that Schaub is one of the league's top 5-7 quarterbacks.
