49ers released QB Damon Huard.
Rookie Nate Davis has won the third quarterback job. The Niners tried shopping the 36-year-old Huard in recent weeks, but every team in the league knew he'd eventually be released. The Patriots are on the lookout for a new backup, and he has an idea of their offense. Green Bay is another possibility.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Damon Huard is likely the "odd man out" among 49ers quarterbacks.
Rookie Nate Davis has played too well to risk waiving. The 49ers may try to shop Huard, but he'll likely be cut and land elsewhere as a free agent.

Rookie Nate Davis completed 10-of-15 passes for 132 yards on Saturday in Dallas.
Davis led the Niners down the field on their game-winning touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. He is making his case to be the No. 3 QB ahead of Damon Huard, whom Mike Singletary said, during summer, would be his third quarterback. It will be interesting to see what they do with Nate.

Damon Huard is locked in as the 49ers third quarterback, according to coach Mike Singletary.
Huard won't be getting many reps in training camp and has no chance to win the starting job. It will be interesting to see if the team tries to sneak fifth-rounder Nate Davis onto the practice squad.

49ers signed QB Damon Huard, formerly of the Chiefs.
It's a big step down from Kurt Warner, but a good sign for Shaun Hill. Huard, 36 in July, battled thumb, neck, and head injuries last year. He won't threaten Hill's job and may not even beat out Alex Smith to be second string.

The 49ers are reportedly on the verge of signing free agent QB Damon Huard.
Assuming the Niners agree to a restructured deal with Alex Smith, he and Huard could compete for the backup job. Huard turns 36 years old this July.
