The 49ers are hoping to get DB Nate Clements (shoulder) back for Week 16.

Clements would give the Niners some nice depth, but he was already benched in favor of Tarrell Brown before getting injured. He'll come back this season as a corner, but could be asked to transition to safety and take a pay cut during the offseason.

If Nate Clements is back with the 49ers next season, it will "almost certainly" be as a safety, according to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli.

Clements had already been removed from his left corner job before injuring his shoulder. His bloated contract that runs through 2013 will make it tough for the Niners to bring him back as a safety. Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer will probably be the team's starting corners in 2010.

CB Nate Clements will be out for 6-8 weeks after breaking his scapula on Sunday.

Clements had been acting as the team's No. 4 corner on Sunday before the injury, but they hope he can recover quick enough for the last few games of the season. Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer will be the starters at corner while Dre' Bly will be the Niners' nickel back.

Coach Mike Singletary said Monday that the 49ers will not place CB Nate Clements (fractured scapula) on I.R. at this time.

The Niners are in the playoff hunt despite being 3-4, and will hope Clements can recover before the stretch run. Tarell Brown will start at left corner opposite Shawntae Spencer in the meantime, with Dre' Bly in the nickel.

Nate Clements was acting as the 49ers' No. 4 cornerback before breaking his scapula in the second quarter Sunday.

Tarell Brown took over at left corner and Dre Bly was the nickel back. Clements was used mostly as a punt returner, a tiny role for someone who signed an eight-year, $80 million contract in 2007. Clements is a candidate for injured reserve due to his shoulder injury.

Nate Clements has been diagnosed with a fractured shoulder blade.

No official word yet, but it seems likely that he's done for the season. Clements had been demoted to third-corner duties for the matchup against Indianapolis' speedy wideouts, but his injury will mean an even bigger role for Tarell Brown.
