Steve Smith led the Panthers with seven receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown against the Dolphins in Week 7.

It could have been so much better. Smith was open all night against single coverage, including twice on deep balls, but Jake Delhomme consistently under- or over-threw his playmaker. His leaping 27-yard touchdown was a reminder that he catches in traffic as well as any receiver in the league. Smith will see plenty of shutdown corner Darrelle Revis next week, but he's tough to sit with three scores in his past two games.

Steve Smith was involved in a minor car accident en route to Thursday's game against the Dolphins, but it won't affect his playing status.

Team spokesman Charlie Dayton said somebody "bumped into Smith," but the receiver was uninjured and will start against Miami. With Jake Delhomme starting to exhibit some stability, we Smith ranked No. 16 among fantasy WRs this week.

According to beat writer Steve Reed, Steve Smith's Week 10 ribs injury is unlikely to keep him out of action going forward.

Smith's ribs are only bruised, and he should be ready for Week 11 despite the Panthers being on a short week. They square off with Miami on Thursday.

Steve Smith caught four passes for 34 yards and two touchdowns against the Falcons in Week 10.

Smith made an outstanding leaping grab in tight coverage for the first score and ended up with bruised ribs after taking a shot to the back on his second touchdown. He almost added a third but was stopped at the 1-yard line on an explosive 19-yard catch-and-run. He remains a must-start fantasy play against the Dolphins next week.

Updating a previous item, Panthers LT Jordan Gross was diagnosed with a broken right ankle and will likely miss the remainder of the season.

Guard Mackenzy Bernadeau came on in the second half, with LG Travelle Wharton kicking to Jake Delhomme's blind side. The 4-5 Panthers aren't out of the Wild Card picture, but the loss of their Pro Bowl left tackle is huge. Whlie Carolina's offense is built from the inside out, they lack quality depth at tackle. The Panthers' skill players should all be downgraded.

Steve Smith was shaken up late in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Falcons.

Smith appeared to take a knee to the back on his second touchdown reception of the day, and the Panthers are calling it a rib injury. He stayed down for awhile but was able to walk off under his own power. Smith returned to the game in the second half.
