 Matt Moore-QB- PanthersJan. 30 - 7:23 pm et
According to beat writer Steve Reed, Matt Moore is not a "slam dunk" as the Panthers' starting quarterback in 2010.
John Fox has been loyal to a fault with his veterans, but we have a hard time believing a washed-up Jake Delhomme has a legit chance to win an open competition. Though Panthers are expected to "add a younger quarterback to the mix as well," Moore has to be considered the favorite to open Week 1 as the starter.

 Jake Delhomme-QB - Panthers Jan. 12 - 10:30 am et

The Charlotte Observer's Scott Fowler expects Jake Delhomme to enter Panthers training camp in 2010 as the team's No. 2 quarterback.
Delhomme's 4-7 record in 2009, compared to Matt Moore's 4-1, is probably enough for Moore to take first-team reps throughout the offseason. Despite his declining physical skills and age (35), Delhomme will be on the roster.

Jake Delhomme is expected back with the Panthers next season because the team has to pay him anyway.
Thanks to an undeserved five-year, $42.5 million deal signed in April of 2009, the Panthers owe Delhomme $12+ million in guarantees next season. It's a ton of money to pay a backup, but that's what Delhomme will likely be. Matt Moore showed more than enough to get the starting job and is at least locked into an offseason competition with Delhomme.

 Matt Moore-QB - Panthers Dec. 28 - 11:08 am et

Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer believes that Matt Moore has a chance to be the Panthers' starter in 2010.
There's no reason to think Moore won't be in the mix. He's 5-2 with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions in seven career starts and has led the Panthers to two really impressive wins the last two weeks. Even if/when Jake Delhomme returns next season, Moore has earned a quarterback competition at the very least.

Panthers GM Marty Hurney insists that the move to place Jake Delhomme (finger) on injured reserve changes nothing about the quarterback's future in Carolina.
"We've made it clear we have confidence in Jake," said Hurney. How could that possibly be? Hurney is on the hook for Delhomme's $13 million guaranteed in 2010, so he has to look for confidence where he can find it. Delhomme, turning 35 in early January, is a longshot to open another season as the starter.

 Jake Delhomme-QB - Panthers Dec. 24 - 10:23 am et

Panthers placed QB Jake Delhomme (finger) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Matt Moore has made some strides in his three starts, and there was no reason to bring back Delhomme even if he were healthy enough to return. He's scheduled to make $13 million in guaranteed money next season, meaning he'll be back to at least compete for a starting job. With 27 turnovers in his last 12 games, however, the Panthers would be wise to move in another direction.
