Saints coach Sean Payton disclosed that MLB Jonathan Vilma underwent a minor scope on his abdomen last month.

The Saints plan to play it cautiously with Vilma, monitoring his snaps early in camp. The surgery will not be an issue into the regular season.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said Tuesday that an internet scam may have led to the two murders at Jonathan Vilma's Long Island apartment last week.

The dead men are believed to have defrauded people in a "black paper scheme," involving the sale of chemicals used to wipe ink off money. The two Liberian immigrants' bodies were found in Brooklyn and Queens after being shot in the head at Vilma's condo. Vilma is not a suspect in the murders.

New York police have raided a Long Island condo owned by Saints LB Jonathan Vilma, after two men were murdered there last week.

Vilma hasn't lived in the condo since 2007, and he thought it was empty. A man claiming to be Vilma's cousin gained entry with four others, and the slayings happened shortly thereafter. Vilma is not believed to be involved in the crimes.

Saints re-signed MLB Jonathan Vilma to a five-year, $34 million contract with $17 million guaranteed.

Of that money, $23 million is available in the first three years. The Saints received a late scare from the Bucs, but Vilma returns as the centerpiece of new coordinator Gregg Williams' defense. The 27-year-old had knee troubles in 2007, but played every defensive snap last season. New Orleans is now assured of keeping both Vilma and its first-round draft pick.

The Saints reportedly faxed a contract proposal to LB Jonathan Vilma directly after the free agent period began.

All along Vilma has been New Orleans' priority re-signing and they don't want to lose him to the Buccaneers. Vilma will do better than Channing Crowder did. The 26-year-old led the Saints with 130 tackles last season.

The Bucs are reportedly working to set up a free agent visit with LB Jonathan Vilma.

Vilma would be viewed as a weak-side linebacker in Tampa Bay and the heir to Derrick Brooks. The Saints, however, are feverishly working to lock him up.
