Saints DEs Will Smith and Charles Grant will not be suspended "at this time," said commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday.
Goodell cited "considerations of fairness, uniform applications of our policies, and competitive integrity" as reasons to defer the suspensions. With the Vikings' Williams Wall allowed to play through the season, it wouldn't be fair to the Saints to lose two of their top defenders for the same StarCaps transgression.

Yahoo Sports reports that the NFL is considering dropping the four-game StarCaps suspensions of Saints DEs Will Smith and Charles Grant.
The league already lost its bid to uphold Kevin and Pat Williams' bans, and will have trouble justifying Smith and Grant's for similar "violations." "That’s one of the ideas we’re throwing around," a league source told Yahoo. "The Players Association would like us to capitulate right now and give up."

Saints DEs Will Smith and Charles Grant could begin their four-game StarCaps suspensions as soon as next week.
The U.S. Appeals Court ruling regarding Pat Williams and Kevin Williams doesn't apply to the Saints players because it involves a Minnesota state court trial. Now that the decision has been made, however, the NFL can move forward with the other suspended players.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday that the players suspended as part of the StarCaps case will be available for Week 1 games.
The Players' Association is appealing the four-games suspensions. The Saints defense will be at full strength for their matchup against Matthew Stafford and the Lions, who will now have Grady Jackson available. The Vikings will also have the Williams Wall intact against the Browns, which makes them one of the top fantasy defenses this week.

NFL.com's Jason La Canfora confirms that Saints DE Charles Grant and Will Smith will avoid their StarCaps suspensions for Week 1 barring the bans being upheld by the NFL on Tuesday.
Smith and Grant, "will be able to play Sun(day) unless court ruling comes by Tues(day) night," La Canfora tweeted. "After Tues(day), any suspension starts Week 2." We are recommending the Saints' fantasy defense against Detroit.

The Saints are planning on DEs Will Smith and Charles Grant playing in Week 1 against Detroit, pending the league intervening and upholding their four-game StarCaps suspensions.
New Orleans' defense looked very good this preseason and would be usable immediately in fantasy leagues against rookie QB Matt Stafford if Grant and Smith can start. Their suspensions are currently under appeal by the Players' Association. Both practiced Monday and the NFL's stance remains unclear.
