Beat writer Matt Maiocco says RCB Shawntae Spencer "played last season at a championship level."
While the left corner spot was a problem area for the Niners, Spencer was more than solid. The 2004 second-round pick is clearly over his torn ACL and has a lock on the starting job heading into 2010.

If Nate Clements is back with the 49ers next season, it will "almost certainly" be as a safety, according to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli.
Clements had already been removed from his left corner job before injuring his shoulder. His bloated contract that runs through 2013 will make it tough for the Niners to bring him back as a safety. Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer will probably be the team's starting corners in 2010.

The 49ers have named Shawntae Spencer their starting right cornerback, over Dre' Bly and Tarell Brown.
Brown is the top talent here, but missed most of camp due to injury. The injury-prone Spencer has just one start since 2006. The Niners will likely end up rotating RCBs throughout the season, so don't count on much IDP value.

Dre' Bly is favored to win the 49ers' starting right cornerback job heading into the third preseason game.
It's a mild surprise because Tarell Brown was expected to win the job. But even at 32 years old, Bly has been able to hold off Brown and sixth-year man Shawntae Spencer. With a good performance Saturday in Dallas, Bly will likely be the Week 1 starter.

The 49ers expect CB Shawntae Spencer (ACL surgery) to be ready for training camp.
He was a possible cap casualty this winter, but is needed now. Spencer, Tarell Brown, and possibly Dre' Bly will battle to replace Walt Harris in August. Brown has the most talent, though, and Spencer fits best as a nickel back.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat's Matt Maiocco reports that 49ers CB Walt Harris tore his ACL during Tuesday's voluntary practice.
The Niners could try stashing him on PUP to start the season, but he's more likely to land on season-ending injured reserve. Harris is 34 and in the last year of his contract, so this is a career-threatening injury. If Maiocco's report is true, the Niners will likely have to go with Tarell Brown at right cornerback. Shawntae Spencer is recovering from his own knee issues.
