Alex Smith | Quarterback

TEAM: San Francisco 49ers
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6'4' / 217
DOB: 5/7/1984
AGE:25
COLLEGE:Utah
CONTRACT INFO: 3/10/2009: Signed a two-year, $6.5 million contract. Details
 Frank Gore-RB- 49ersNov. 19 - 3:21 pm et
Of Frank Gore's 40 rushes for 187 yards the past two weeks, 16 attempts and 112 yards have come out of the shotgun formation.
Information like this is why Matt Maiocco is one of our favorite beat writers. The Niners have been trending toward the shotgun with Alex Smith over the past three weeks, and Gore's effectiveness is another reason to stick with the transition to a more open offense.

 Shaun Hill-QB - 49ers Nov. 16 - 10:13 am et

Shaun Hill does not figure into the Niners' plans as a starting quarterback again, sources tell beat writer Matt Maiocco.
This is Alex Smith's job for the foreseeable future. The team is going to give him a chance to be their "quarterback of the future" and they see Hill as a strict backup. No. 3 QB Nate Davis is nowhere close to seeing the field.

Despite the poor numbers, coach Mike Singletary said Alex Smith did "a good job" Thursday, especially in managing the game in the second half.
Smith is being credited with checking out of quite a few passes and into successful Frank Gore run plays. The game was a setback for Smith as a passer, but he remains in no jeopardy of losing his starting job.

 Alex Smith-QB - 49ers Nov. 12 - 11:39 pm et

Alex Smith completed 16-of-23 passes for just 118 yards and one interception in the 49ers' Week 10 win over the Bears.
Smith appeared to regress after three strong performances, turning back the clock to the tentative quarterback from 2005-07. He started strong operating out of the shotgun, but he didn't deal well with the pressure from a reinvigorated Bears front four. On the positive side, he didn't throw the game away like his counterpart did. Smith is no better than a low-end QB2 option at Green Bay next week.

The 49ers ran more than half of their plays out of the shotgun against the Titans in Week 9.
"I like the things that work," Singletary explained. "It is certainly something we have the tools to do." Alex Smith operated almost exclusively out of the shotgun in college, and he's clearly more comfortable in that formation. Singletary deserves credit for being malleable enough to make the change to a pass-first offense, which will increase the value of all their relevant fantasy players.

 Alex Smith-QB - 49ers Nov. 11 - 12:15 pm et

49ers coach Mike Singletary gave Alex Smith positive reviews despite being picked off three times in Week 9.
Singletary said Smith did a good job and that only one of the picks was his fault. Smith has solid job security, as the Niners have trusted him to employ a more pass-heavy attack. He's a QB2 against the Bears on Thursday.
