Alex Smith revealed he underwent arthroscopic ankle surgery in April.
That's the first time we've heard that. Smith said he "didn't start feeling healthy until about the last two weeks." With Tony Curtis cut to make room for his arrival, Smith has a good opportunity to get his career back on track as the Birds' second tight end.

Eagles signed TE Alex Smith, formerly of the Patriots.
Smith was released by the Patriots on Saturday. There were rumors of an A.J. Feeley for Smith swap last week, so it's no surprise that Smith is landing in Philadelphia. Brent Celek is still the starter, but Smith immediately steps in as the No. 2 tight end ahead of Tony Curtis.

Free agent TE Alex Smith is en route to New York for a visit with the Giants.
The Giants must not be in love with Darcy Johnson behind Kevin Boss. Smith is a better blocker than Johnson, but doesn't do anything particularly well.

Patriots released TE Alex Smith.
Now the Eagles can get him for free. Smith was due a $1.55 million salary, which was too much for the mediocre talent. The 2005 third-round pick will probably only get the minimum on his next contract.
 Ben Watson-TE - Patriots Sep. 3 - 8:36 am et  

Ben Watson has been passed by David Thomas on the Patriots' depth chart and may be on the roster bubble.
The drop-prone '04 first-round pick also battled injuries this offseason, which have been a problem throughout Watson's career. The Patriots would have to carry four TEs on the roster for both Watson and Alex Smith to make it.

 Chris Baker-TE - Patriots Aug. 13 - 10:28 pm et  

Chris Baker caught three passes for 22 yards and two touchdowns against the Eagles in the Patriots preseason opener.
Alex Smith didn't catch a pass and Ben Watson sat out the game with an undisclosed injury. Watson appears to be in Bill Belichick's doghouse while Baker played every snap in the first half. The Pats have talked about involving their tight ends more in the red zone, and Baker may be the primary beneficiary.
