According to beat writer Tim MacMahon, the Cowboys' "easy decision" in the backfield is to make Felix Jones the "lead horse."
MacMahon believes Marion Barber may "already be wearing down" and that his struggles in short yardage are a "serious concern." The team is expected be open to trading either Barber or Tashard Choice this offseason, but they may be hesitant to pull the trigger after all three backs missed time with injuries in 2009. For a team that has the look of a serious contender, the backfield depth is more necessity than luxury.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Marion Barber could "slip to the bottom of the pecking order" if he doesn't show improvement.
Owner Jerry Jones said as much last week when he indicated that Barber's injury concerns could lead to fewer carries. Felix Jones' late-season emergence leaves Barber's role up in the air heading into the offseason.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated that money won't be a factor in Marion Barber returning for the 2010 season, but injury concerns could cause a change in his usage pattern.
MBIII's injuries have been of the nagging variety, but the Cowboys still haven't been able to rely on him down the stretch for two straight years. Felix Jones has earned a greater share of the early-down carries, and Tashard Choice is expected to see more time on passing downs. ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins shot down a "hot rumor" that the Cowboys are shopping Barber, who is due $4M bonus on top of his $3.8M salary in 2010.

Owner Jerry Jones hinted that he'd like to see Tashard Choice more involved in the short-range passing game going forward.
Choice caught 12 passes in the first four games but was limited to just four receptions on nine attempts in the final 14 games. He's a natural pass catcher, so it makes sense to use him in the third-down role. With Felix Jones seeing more early-down work, Marion Barber's role figures to decrease considerably in 2010.

Marion Barber managed just 14 yards on eight carries in the Cowboys' playoff loss to the Vikings.
Eight carries were too many. Barber was in for the first snap of the game, but Felix Jones got the first touch out of Dallas' backfield and was clearly the better option throughout. MB3's decline in usage down the stretch is likely a sign of things to come. Despite being just 26 years old, Barber has the look of a broken-down back. He averaged just 3.6 YPC in his last seven games, including the playoffs, and will be a committee member in 2010.

Marion Barber is active for Sunday's playoff game at Minnesota, as expected.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen, however, reports that the Cowboys have no way to protect MB3's troublesome knee, leaving him susceptible to aggravation. He's also no longer their best option in the backfield. Dallas' inactives: third QB Stephen McGee, CB Cletis Gordon, S Mike Hamlin, LB Jason Williams, G Montrae Holland, C Duke Preston, T Pat McQuistan, and LB Curtis Johnson.
