Coach Mike Smith revealed Monday that the Falcons have opened their left end position to competition.
Jamaal Anderson is the incumbent, but has two sacks in 31 career games. His chief competition will be Chauncey Davis, who got a $14M extension this offseason. Longer shots are Kroy Biermann and rookie Lawrence Sidbury.

Falcons agreed to terms with DE Chauncey Davis on a four-year, $14 million contract.
He's expected to receive $8 million over the first two seasons. Davis, a rotational end, often replaces LE Jamaal Anderson in run situations, with Anderson kicking inside to tackle. Davis is coming off a career-high four-sack season. He also fell on three fumbles and made 38 tackles, another personal best.

The player rep for DE Chauncey Davis indicated that his client plans to test the free agent market.
"He wants to be a starter," said the agent. "He’s ready to take his career to that next level." Davis isn't much of a pass rusher, but he's only 26 and could get a shot to be an every-down player in a 4-3 defense elsewhere.
