Jim Leonhard | Defensive Back

TEAM: New York Jets
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5'8' / 186
DOB: 10/27/1982
AGE:27
COLLEGE:Wisconsin
CONTRACT INFO: 3/3/2009: Signed a three-year, $5.875 million contract. Details
 Eric Smith-DB- JetsNov. 19 - 9:08 am et
Eric Smith is expected to start in place of Jim Leonhard (thumb) against the Patriots Sunday.
It's a pretty big blow to the Jets as Leonhard was the "quarterback" of the defense, wearing the helmet headset and calling the plays. The Jets can't afford any communication issues facing Tom Brady and Randy Moss.

 Jim Leonhard-DB - Jets Nov. 16 - 5:58 pm et

Jets SS Jim Leonhard's status is uncertain going forward after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured thumb.
Coach Rex Ryan provided no timetable for Leonhard to return, but said the injury "doesn't sound good to me." Eric Smith will likely take over. Leonhard was averaging five tackles a game with one pick through nine weeks.

 Kerry Rhodes-DB - Jets Aug. 10 - 6:10 pm et

Kerry Rhodes will stay at free safety this season, with Jim Leonhard starting at strong safety for the Jets.
This supports the idea that Rhodes is "Rex Ryan's new Ed Reed." Leonhard is backed up by Eric Smith, while James Ihedigbo is behind Rhodes on the free side. Leonhard is the best bet for tackles in the Jets' secondary.

 Jim Leonhard-DB - Jets Apr. 15 - 12:12 pm et

Jim Leonhard is expected to replace Leon Washington as the Jets' primary punt returner this season.
Washington will stay on kickoff returns, but the Jets hope to keep him fresher for an increased offensive role. Leonhard will likely also start at safety, although it remains to be seen if he's at the free or strong position.

 Jim Leonhard-DB - Jets Mar. 4 - 1:37 pm et

Jim Leonhard's three-year deal with the Jets is worth $6 million and includes a $1 million signing bonus.
Leonhard is expected to start, but this is third safety money. Still, if Leonhard's smallish build doesn't hold up in 2009, the Jets could put him in a backup/special teams role and not be overpaying. Good deal for New York.

 Jim Leonhard-DB - Jets Mar. 3 - 1:50 pm et

Jets agreed to terms with S Jim Leonhard on a three-year contract.
The Broncos joined the bidding late, but New York apparently upped its offer. Leonhard, 26, has held up in 20 spot starts for Baltimore and Buffalo over the last three years and was a playmaker down the stretch last season. Not many full-time starting safeties are 5'8/185, but Rex Ryan's blitzing defense does protect defensive backs well. Leonhard figures to play free safety with Kerry Rhodes on the strong side. That would help Rhodes' IDP value.
