49ers OLB Manny Lawson has been removed from the team's nickel package.
Lawson began the season as a three-down player, being used at outside linebacker on early downs and as a defensive end in passing situations. He's lost the latter duty to Ahmad Brooks. The move is fairly surprising because Lawson's been playing pretty well with three sacks in his last five games.

49ers OLB Manny Lawson will not come off the field on third downs this season.
Lawson will start at outside linebacker and then shift to defensive end on passing downs. His sack numbers should rise, although Lawson admits that he hasn't fully rediscovered his pass-rush technique.

The 49ers plan to use OLB Manny Lawson at right defensive end on passing downs, according to defensive coordinator Greg Manusky.
The nickel line has Lawson at RE and Parys Haralson at LE with Justin Smith and Kentwan Balmer inside. Lawson's pass-rushing chances will rise greatly if he keeps this position. He's no longer being used as a cover linebacker.

The 49ers plan to use left outside linebacker Manny Lawson as an every-down player this season.
Lawson had three sacks as mostly a "nickel" linebacker last year, but played hurt. He could jump into the 7-9 sack range as a healthy three-down player.

49ers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky will continue to run a true 3-4 defense after scrapping Mike Nolan's "hybrid 3-4" scheme.
Manusky made the switch in the second half of last season, and the Niners' defense improved by almost 10 points per game. The true 3-4 should benefit Manny Lawson, who has added 15 pounds and is expected to add a pass rushing presence on the outside.
