Raiders coach Tom Cable confirmed Wednesday that JaMarcus Russell has been permanently benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski.
Russell's nine-game 2009 stint as Oakland's starter ends with a miserable 5.2 YPA, 47.1 completion rate, six fumbles, and nine picks compared to two TD passes. Few quarterbacks in our generation have been less dedicated, and Russell's regression may force Oakland to draft or acquire another high-profile signal caller in spring of 2010. He can be dropped in dynasty leagues.

Bruce Gradkowski took first-team quarterback reps during the portion of Raiders practice that's open to the media Wednesday.
JaMarcus Russell took a knee while Gradkowski directed the starting offense. Beat writer David White speculates that this could be "media tricks" by the Raiders, but coach Tom Cable has made it clear that Russell's starting job is in jeopardy. Charlie Frye doesn't appear to be in the mix to start.

Coach Tom Cable said Monday that the Raiders are considering starting Charlie Frye at quarterback in Week 11.
Frye has three appearances since 2006. The former third-round pick holds a career record of 6-14, YPA of 6.1, and 16-25 TD to INT ratio. He may be a better option than JaMarcus Russell, but definitely isn't a long-term solution. Frye could get the nod because Bruce Gradkowski has a hamstring injury.

JaMarcus Russell says he has no idea why he was benched in Week 10.
"I really can't explain it," he said. "I really don't know what to say about it, but that was (coach Tom Cable's) decision, and just move on." Russell completed 9-of-24 passes for 67 yards (2.8 YPA) before being yanked.

Raiders coach Tom Cable refused to commit to JaMarcus Russell as his starting quarterback in Sunday's post-game press conference.
Owner Al Davis is a staunch Russell supporter, at one point even calling the bumbling quarterback "a great player," so beat reporter Jerry McDonald suggests that Cable's stance will threaten his job security. Still, Cable would be right to bench Russell. His 47.1 completion rate and 5.5 YPA both rank 30th in the league, and Russell has a 2:9 TD to INT ratio for the year.

JaMarcus Russell completed just 9-of-24 passes for 67 yards before being benched in the Raiders' loss on Sunday.
Russell over- and under-threw several targets on the day but also suffered from his receivers' case of the drops. When he was benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski in the third quarter, Russell walked to the sideline and showed little emotion. Russell will likely start again next week against the Bengals but is definitely not even close to a fantasy option.
