The Greenwood (SC) County Coroner ruled Sunday that Bears DE Gaines Adams died of cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart.
Adams presumably lived his 26 years with the enlarged heart, but it wasn't discovered until his death. He was in perfect physical condition. Adams' NFL career ends with 15 sacks in 47 games. He was an unanimous All-American as a senior at Clemson, where he shares the all-time record for sacks with Michael Dean Perry. Adams was pronounced dead at 8:21AM Sunday.

Bears DE Gaines Adams passed away Sunday morning for undisclosed reasons. Profootballtalk.com reports that Adams is "believed" to have suffered a heart attack.
The Greenwood (SC) County Coroner said Adams "appeared to be in perfect health," so it appears his death was tragically a fluke. An autopsy will be done later today. Adams, the No. 4 overall pick in 2007, racked up 13 sacks, 76 tackles, and two interceptions in his first two seasons with Tampa before being dealt to Chicago prior to October's trade deadline. He was slated for a major role in 2010, likely replacing free agent LE Adewale Ogunleye as a starter.

Bears DE Mark Anderson drew the start on Monday night in place of injured starter Adewale Ogunleye (leg).
Anderson, who had a sack in the game, was part of a rotation that included Gaines Adams and rookie Jarron Gilbert. With Ogunleye's Bears career likely over, the team is in evaluation mode at the left defensive end position.

Bears LE Adewale Ogunleye suffered a small fracture to his left fibula during Sunday's loss to the Ravens and is almost certainly done for the season.
Ogunleye was already in a walking boot with crutches after the game. He likely won't need surgery, but it's an injury that takes six weeks to heal. At age 32 and in the final year of his contract, Ogunleye's future with the team is in serious doubt. They'll get a look at Gaines Adams and Mark Anderson in the final two games of the season.

Gaines Adams has totaled two tackles and zero sacks since the Bears acquired him from the Bucs in mid-October.
Adams played 33 snaps in his first game, but he hasn't been in for more than 10 in game since. Defensive line guru Rod Marinelli has his hands full in trying to bring out Adams' potential for 2010.

Bears declared DE Gaines Adams, WR Juaquin Iglesias, RB Adrian Peterson, CB D.J. Moore, OG Lance Louis, DL Matt Toeaina, DL Jarron Gilbert and LB Hunter Hillenmeyer inactive for Week 6.
Adams was acquired Friday evening from the Bucs, but won't play until Week 7 against Cincinnati. The Bears are taking on the Falcons Sunday night.
