49ers coach Mike Singletary said Monday that Nate Clements will return to the team in 2010 as a cornerback.
Clements won't move to safety (FS Dashon Goldson is entrenched as a starter), or be cut despite losing his job to Tarell Brown at midseason and a $6M salary in 2010. Clements will have to earn his starting position back next August, but he's a solid bet to do so. Brown will likely man the nickel.

49ers coach Mike Singletary confirmed that Dre' Bly will start over Tarell Brown at left corner this week.
Nate Clements was sent to the bench a few weeks back in favor of Brown, but that experiment isn't working out. Bly has more experience but doesn't provide much of an upgrade over Brown.

The 49ers are considering benching LCB Tarell Brown for Dre' Bly.
Brown played well in his first three starts after overtaking Nate Clements in Week 7, but was burned for two touchdowns by the Packers last Sunday. Bly is a trusty vet, but wouldn't present an upgrade in terms of talent or speed.

If Nate Clements is back with the 49ers next season, it will "almost certainly" be as a safety, according to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli.
Clements had already been removed from his left corner job before injuring his shoulder. His bloated contract that runs through 2013 will make it tough for the Niners to bring him back as a safety. Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer will probably be the team's starting corners in 2010.

49ers LCB Tarell Brown left Sunday's game with bruised ribs.
Brown was down for awhile, but ended up jogging off under his own power. Dre' Bly has come on to replace him. Brown returned to the game in the fourth quarter.

Tarell Brown will start at left corner over Nate Clements against the Colts on Sunday.
The coaches think that Brown matches up better with the Colts' smaller, speedier wideouts. The Colts run a lot of three-wide sets, so Clements will be on the field plenty. Still, it's a big move by the Niners to demote Clements, who is scheduled to make $6 million next season. Shawntae Spencer has played well enough to keep the right corner job locked up.
