NFL.com's Gil Brandt predicts that Matt Ryan will win the NFL's Most Valuable Player award this season.
Brandt isn't fazed by Atlanta's preseason struggles, picking Mike Smith's team to overtake New Orleans in the NFC South. Through three exhibition games, Ryan has completed just 53.3% of his passes with a startlingly poor 4.73 YPA. The Falcons do appear to be going very "vanilla," however, and a fast start is foreseeable against Pittsburgh's suspect secondary in Week 1.

Matt Ryan completed 10-of-22 passes for 123 yards and an interception against the Falcons in Friday's preseason game.
Ryan found WR Roddy White for an 18-yard touchdown, but overthrew his stud receiver after White beat CB Sean Smith on a deep route. The two will be in-sync come Week 1.

Matt Ryan finished 8-of-13 for 76 yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Patriots.
Ryan hit Michael Turner twice, which is noteworthy considering Turner has only 22 career receptions. Ryan produced just one field goal in three series and just over one quarter before giving way to John Parker Wilson.

ESPN's Pat Yasinskas believes 3,500 passing yards and 25 touchdowns is a conservative estimate for Matt Ryan's 2010 numbers.
We agree. While the Falcons' run-first designs seem to limit Ryan's fantasy ceiling at first glance, the team's pledge to keep Michael Turner under 300 carries may also indicate intentions to throw the football more. The Falcons have significantly increased their no-huddle packages during offseason workouts, while placing an emphasis on vertical passing.

Matt Ryan studied tape of the game's elite quarterbacks this offseason.
Ryan says the biggest thing he took away from watching Peyton Manning and Tom Brady was all the short passes they throw. They "don't ever think about going to another route until the defense takes the underneath route away," Ryan wrote on SI.com. Ryan is maturing quickly and is an excellent bounce-back candidate as he heads into his third year.

The Falcons are increasing their no-huddle repertoire from 10-12 plays to about 30.
Matt Ryan has a better handle on the offense, can better read opposing defenses, and now knows when to attack, so the Falcons are giving him more responsibility. Somewhat of a post-hype candidate this season, Ryan is a good bet to increase his numbers across the board.
