Falcons coach Mike Smith named free safety Thomas DeCoud his defensive MVP for the 2009 season.
It was a split vote, with GM Thomas Dimitroff giving his award to star linebacker Curtis Lofton. A first-year starter, DeCoud excelled in run support while proving more than adequate in coverage. He's a defensive building block for the Falcons.

 Erik Coleman-DB - Falcons Aug. 10 - 6:36 pm et

The Falcons have moved Erik Coleman from free safety to strong safety, where he'll call the team's plays on defense. Thomas DeCoud will start on the free side.
Rookie William Moore (knee surgery) is out of the mix. Coleman will play closer to the line of scrimmage at strong safety and is a much more desirable IDP target. DeCoud's natural position is "center field" because he has strong coverage ability, so this is Atlanta's best secondary lineup.

Second-year man Thomas DeCoud has been penciled in as the Falcons' starting strong safety.
With William Moore (knee) out two-to-four weeks, DeCoud is the clear choice for the job. Jamaal Fudge isn't going to push him. We'll see what happens when Moore returns to full strength.

 William Moore-DB - Falcons Aug. 6 - 4:31 pm et

Falcons rookie S William Moore will miss one to four weeks after undergoing a "procedure" on his left knee.
No details were released, but it sounds like a minor scope. The hard-hitting second-rounder was expected to battle Thomas DeCoud for the starting strong safety job throughout camp. Moore may still have a puncher's chance if he returns in a week or two, but DeCoud is now clearly in the driver's seat.

Scout.com's Adam Caplan says second-year man Thomas DeCoud will likely be the Falcons' new strong safety.
He's going to have to beat out second-round pick William Moore, but DeCoud would likely be Atlanta's best option in coverage. The Falcons will probably lean towards Moore if they're looking for a more physical, in-the-box type.

 William Moore-DB - Falcons Apr. 25 - 9:15 pm et

Falcons selected Missouri SS William Moore with the No. 55 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
The value is a bit questionable here, but Atlanta is unproven at safety and Moore will provide immediate competition for Thomas DeCoud. The Falcons seem to prefer DeCoud as a third safety type and special teamer, and Moore is an in-the-box player. He could be an IDP sleeper if he wins the job.
