Cowboys beat writer Tim MacMahon believes FS Ken Hamlin is a "prime candidate" to be cut this offseason.

Alan Ball held his own in a four-game stretch as a fill-in, and Hamlin is due close to $6M next season. Much of the money left on his six-year, $39M is not guaranteed, and Hamlin's production has fallen off dramatically the past two seasons. The Cowboys could get away with Ball at a fraction of the cost.

Cowboys FS Ken Hamlin (ankle) is expected to return to game action Saturday against the Saints.

Hamlin practiced Tuesday for the first time since suffering a high ankle sprain a month ago. The return of the Cowboys' defensive signal caller will be a boost against Sean Payton's intricate schemes.

Cowboys declared FS Ken Hamlin, DB Cletis Gordon, LB Jason Williams, OG Montrae Holland, C Duke Preston, OT Marc Colombo and third QB Stephen McGee inactive for Sunday's game against the Giants.

Outside of Hamlin, who is dealing with a high ankle sprain, the Cowboys are relatively healthy. We'll see if that can help them avoid another December swoon.

Cowboys declared S Ken Hamlin, PR Allen Rossum, TE Jason Williams, G Montrae Holland, C Duke Preston, OT Marc Colombo and LB Curtis Johnson inactive for Sunday's game against the Redskins.

Johnson has been flagged for three penalities in the last two games so he's "down" in favor of Steve Octavien. Otherwise, no surprises for the Cowboys.

With Ken Hamilin (ankle) out, Alan Ball will make his first NFL start at free safety on Sunday.

Hamlin is out 2-4 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Ball, a 2007 seventh-round pick out of Illinois, was moved to safety this season after playing corner his previous two seasons. Rookie safety Mike Hamlin and CB Orlando Scandrick will fill in for Ball on special teams.

Hamlin's loss isn't major for Dallas' fantasy defense because he hasn't made a big play all year. Pat Watkins will take over opposite Gerald Sensabaugh.
