The Chargers are expected to look into a new contract for Antonio Gates this offseason.
Gates has another year left on his contract, but they'll want to take care of their leading receiver before it becomes an issue. Gates won't come cheaply after posting a career-high in yards and yards per reception in 2009.

Antonio Gates caught a game-high eight passes for 93 yards in San Diego's second-round playoff loss to the Jets.
The Jets attempted to defend Gates a number of ways, assigning third S Eric Smith to him some of the time and rolling double teams his way at others. Nothing worked, but an apparent miscommunication with Philip Rivers in the third quarter that resulted in an interception in the Chargers' own red zone was a back-breaker. 2009 was still arguably a best-ever year for Gates. His yardage total (1,157) and YPC average (14.6) were both career highs.

Jets beat writer Rich Cimini expects Darrelle Revis to be assigned to Vincent Jackson in the Divisional Round.
Cimini also expects Jets FS Kerry Rhodes to be on Antonio Gates. Revis held Chad Ochocinco to 28 yards in the Wild Card round, and The Ocho was catch-less until the fourth quarter. Malcom Floyd will need to have a big game.

Antonio Gates was limited to a 12-yard touchdown catch against the Redskins in Week 17.
Gates capped off the second series with the score and hit the sidelines for the rest of the game. After an injury-plagued 2008 season, Gates returned to form this year, posting a career-high 1,157 yards to go with 79 receptions and eight touchdowns. Turning 30 this offseason, Gates should enter the 2010 season as the top fantasy tight end.

Antonio Gates has been elected to his sixth AFC Pro Bowl.
Gates has had better fantasy seasons thanks to higher touchdown totals, but 2009 has been his best season in terms of yardage and yards after the catch. He's managed to stay healthy all season and should be the top tight end off the board in 2010.

Antonio Gates has established a new career high for yardage in a season with 1,145.
Gates' career year is coming in his seventh season and at the age of 29. He's been perfectly healthy all season, leading to a career best 6.2 yards after catch average. Considering his average draft position was around the fifth or sixth round, Gates was a steal for fantasy owners this season.
