An MRI on Chris Canty's knee showed only a sprained MCL.
That's a sigh of relief for the Giants. Canty will sit out the season finale, but will be fine for the entire offseason program.

Giants DL Chris Canty hurt his knee in practice Wednesday and is headed for an MRI.
He's been diagnosed with a sprained MCL. The Giants have their fingers crossed that this is just a strain and no ligaments are damaged. Canty was signed to a six-year, $42 million contract last offseason.

Chris Canty has supplanted Fred Robbins as the Giants' starting defensive tackle next to NT Barry Cofield.
Canty, who the Giants signed for $42 million this offseason, has appeared in just four games. He should give New York a boost in run defense because of his size (6'7/300) and youth, and can't hurt the team's pass rush. Robbins, 32, is coming off microfracture surgery and had only one sack all season.

Giants WLB Michael Boley (knee) and DL Chris Canty (calf) have had no setbacks in practice and are expected to return this week against the Chargers.
Boley is the team's best pass-rushing linebacker, so his returns should be a much-needed boost for the struggling secondary. Canty will work back into the defensive line rotation.

Giants declared DL Chris Canty, WR Ramses Barden, CB Aaron Ross, RB Gartrell Johnson, LB Michael Boley (knee), C Adam Koets, WR Mario Manningham and T Guy Whimper inactive for Sunday's game against the Eagles.
Canty and Boley are targeting the Week 9 game against the Chargers for their return. Domenik Hixon will start in place of Manningham, but expect rookie Hakeem Nicks to get the majority of snaps.

Though Giants DL Chris Canty (calf) and WLB Michael Boley (knee) returned to the practice field Thursday, they were limited to individual drills.
The Giants will reassess the two defenders Friday morning to see if they can increase their participation. They could return to give the defense a much-needed shot in the arm against the Chargers in Week 9.
