John Carney was signed to a kicking consultant role for the Saints just days after being released.

The 21-year vet will offer pointers to Garrett Hartley. The consultant position means Carney won't be allowed to kick for the Saints or any other team for the rest of the season. Hartley's job is safe, as is Shaun Suisham's in Dallas.

Saints released K John Carney.

Carney's departure was a fait accompli after he was replaced by Hartley three weeks ago. The Saints weren't going to use two roster spots on kickers during the playoffs, and Hartley has been the more reliable option. Carney could draw interest in Dallas if Shaun Suisham falters.

Saints K Garrett Hartley (limited, hip) expects to kick Saturday against the Cowboys.

The combination of a missed extra point and Hartley's hip injury left his status in question earlier this week. He's been more reliable than John Carney, however, so expect Hartley to be active Saturday night.

Saints K Garrett Hartley missed Wednesday's practice with a hip injury.

Hartley's injury isn't known to be serious, but injured kickers are never worth relying on in fantasy leagues, especially when the team they play for has an alternative on the roster. John Carney is still a member of the Saints.

Garrett Hartley is the Saints kicker for now even though John Carney is still on the roster.

Coach Sean Payton is keeping Carney just in case Hartley falls flat. Hartley went 4-for-5 on field goals against the Redskins last week in his season debut and made all three extra points. There's no reason to think Carney will get his job back, making Hartley an elite fantasy option the rest of the way.

Carney has lost his job to Garrett Hartley, who will kick against Washington.
