David Thornton and Gerald McRath are listed as the Titans' starting outside linebackers on the team's pre-camp depth chart.

Will Witherspoon would have given Thornton a serious run for the strong-side job, but he'll be needed on the weak side with McRath suspended for the first four games. Thornton's job could be in jeopardy once McRath returns.

Suspended Titans LB Gerald McRath claims that his four-game ban did not result from steroid use.

"I have no idea (what the substance was)," McRath said. "I didn’t test positive for a steroid. ... None of the products I took was on (the NFL’s) banned list." Like Brian Cushing's positive test, McRath's occurred early last season. He has dropped his appeal and promises to "keep on trucking."

NFL suspended Titans LB Gerald McRath four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

A fourth-round pick last year, McRath showed starting-caliber ability in extensive rookie season action in place of injured OLBs David Thornton and Keith Bulluck. The ban may prove a big blow to the Titans' defense, as Thornton will probably now be forced back into the starting lineup. He was previously on the roster bubble. McRath is eligible to return in Week 5.

Gerald McRath is "without question" ready to start this season, according to beat writer Jim Wyatt.

David Thornton may be out of a starting job once he returns from shoulder surgery. McRath and free agent signee Will Witherspoon figure to bookend MLB Stephen Tulloch as the Titans go with a youth movement at linebacker this season.

Titans SLB David Thornton is not guaranteed to remain a starter when he returns from his shoulder surgery and hip injury.

"He's still a ways away alright now," Fisher said. "Right now he's not able to practice, so no, he's not (a starter)." Fisher went to call Thornton's injury history a "legitimate concern." The Titans have alternatives this year with Gerald McRath and Will Witherspoon.

Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt believes second-year LB Gerald McRath can step in as a starter if necessary.

Stephen Tulloch is holding down middle linebacker, but the two outside spots are tenuous. David Thornton, coming off shoulder/pectoral surgery, may not be kept around at $4.3M, and Keith Bulluck (torn ACL) remains unsigned. Recently signed Will Witherspoon is likely to hold down one spot, and McRath is a viable option at the other if the injured veterans fall through.
