 Jason Spezza-C- SenatorsJul. 20 - 1:29 pm et
Jason Spezza wants to stay with the Ottawa Senators.
There were a lot of trade rumors surrounding Spezza in the weeks before his no-trade clause kicked in on July 1st. There rumors were mostly sparked by the relevation that Spezza was upset after the Senators' fans booed him in the playoffs. "I just want to clear up a lot of the talk going on, at no point did I ever demand a trade to Bryan Murray," Spezza said. "I’ve seen a lot of what’s been written and talked about. At the end of the year, I was pretty emotional and upset. I was upset at losing, I was upset at response I got (booed at home), I talked to Bryan about -- I see it in the newspapers every year, they talk about me, and I said, if you want to move you can move me . . . if you think it’s best for the team. He told me he wasn’t going to move me and that was the understanding I was under."

Jason Spezza's no-trade clause kicked in on Thursday.
After weeks of rumors about the Senators trading him, Spezza can move on with the knowledge that Ottawa can't trade him without his approval. "Throw cold water on it," said GM Bryan Murray. "As of today, there’s nothing happening with Jason Spezza other than he’s a member of the Ottawa Senators. We have had conversations leading up to (Thursday)."

Barring something unforeseen, it looks as if Jason Spezza will be with the Senators in 2010-11.
Ottawa GM Bryan Murray told reporters on Friday that he can't find a trading partner for Spezza and that he expects the playmaking pivot to be at the Sens' training camp in September. "There’s not going to be (a trade) at this point in time," said Murray."We’ve talked enough about Jason. I’m very happy. We’ll talk to Jason as I get back to Ottawa and continue to get this back in place so that all the speculation goes away." Spezza has a no movement clause that kicks in on July 1st, so it appears that unless there is a last-minute change, Spezza will once again be the Sens' top center in 2010-11.

GM Bryan Murray spoke with Jason Spezza over the phone and then downplayed the possibility of trading him.
"There’s nothing going on with Jason. There are so many people concerned about my job that I couldn’t dare make a trade if I wanted to make one," Murray said. "There’s nothing going on with him right now and there’s very little in any conversations with any teams at any rate. This has gotten bigger than it should have and it’s a nonexistent thing at this point." Murray said both Spezza and him were a little concerned about the comments they had made that had served to fuel the recent trade rumors. Stay tuned.

Jason Spezza does not appear as though he will end up being traded.
His "no move" clause kicks in July 1 and it will harder to deal him somewhere when he has more control over the situation. Spezza is also due a $4-million bonus on July 1 and he already carries a hefty cap hit of $7 million a year over the next five seasons. GM Bryan Murray maintains that he is not actively shopping Spezza, but he is listening to offers. It will be difficult for Murray to move him, but it doesn't mean it won't happen. We'll let you know if we hear anything.

According to the Ottawa Citizen, there is some speculation that Jason Spezza might be dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Derick Brassard, Kristian Huselius and the fourth overall pick in the 2010 NHL entry draft.
That would contradict previous reports that Columbus won't trade the fourth overall pick for Spezza straight up. However, the Blue Jackets could use a puck-moving center to play alongside Rick Nash, so we wouldn't be surprised if the two sides get something done. The Citizen also speculated that Spezza might be shipped to Pittsburgh in a deal involving the rights to Sergei Gonchar, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. That sounds very unlikely as Pittsburgh already has three superb centers in Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jordan Staal.
