Jiri Hudler was a topic of discussion during HockeyFest 2009 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit over the weekend.
Wings' general manager Ken Holland did his best to explain the situation. Here is what he said: "He's playing in the KHL, he's gone, but at some point in time we'll suspend him. He'll come off our cap but we'll continue to own his rights. He's got a two-year contract. Whenever he chooses to come back -- if and when he ever chooses to come back and play in the NHL -- he's got to honor this contract for two seasons." Hudler agreed to a two-year pact with Moscow Dynamo in the KHL in July, but was awarded a two-year NHL contract with Detroit through arbitration. His KHL deal allows him to leave after one season, so he could be back in the NHL next campaign; at which point the Red Wings would welcome him back with open arms. "He's 26 years of age, he had 60 points last year (actually 23 goals, 34 assists)," Holland said. "It's hard to find 26-year-olds that can get 60 points. Absolutely he's welcome back."
