Martin Brodeur turned aside 20 of 22 Islanders' shots he faced in New Jersey's 4-2 win Saturday night.
Brodeur had struggled against the Islanders away from home, going 1-4-0 over his past five starts with a goals-against average close to 4.00 before tonight's win. Backup Yann Denis likely would have gotten a rare start this game, but became ill after Friday night’s game versus the Canadiens and although he felt better at practice Saturday, coach Jacques Lemaire opted to go with Brodeur. The move paid off as Brodeur earned his league-leading 31st win of the season, and the Devils kept pace with the Capitals in the battle for first place in the Eastern conference.
