Matt Duchene is making a strong case for himself to earn the NHL's top rookie honor, the Calder Trophy, at the end of the season.
He currently leads all first-year players with 37 points in 55 games and is tied with Islanders' forward John Tavares for the most goals with 17. Duchene has picked up steam of late, while Tavares has been slumping. Buffalo defenseman Tyler Myers, who was just named the NHL's rookie of the month for January, is a top contender for the Calder as well. Should be a great race to the finish.

Matt Duchene scored one goal and added an assist in Colorado's 3-2 loss to Dallas Friday night.
The multipoint night gives the rookie 17 goals and 36 points in 53 games this season. Duchene has exceeded expectations in his first season with the Avalanche, and are a big reason for Colorado being in the thick of the western conference playoff race. Brandon Yip finished with two assists.

The Flyers, who have never had a player win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie, are touting James vanRiemsdyk for the honor.
JVR is third in rookie scoring with 30 points, behind only the Avs' Matt Duchene with 33 and the Isles' John Tavares with 31. Other top contenders for the award are Buffalo defenseman Tyler Myers and Red Wing goalie Jimmy Howard.

With 16 goals and 34 points, Duchene is making a strong case for this season's Calder trophy.

Matt Duchene scored twice and added a helper in Colorado's 6-0 win over the Oilers Monday.
Duchene assisted on a first-period goal by John-Michael Liles that turned out to be the game winner. Liles also finished the contest with two helpers. Wojtek Wolski had a three point night as well with a trio of assists, while Kyle Cumiskey added two goals in the victory.
