The Washington Capitals have sent Michael Nylander to Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League.
Nylander will likely be bought out at the end of the season as he still has one year remaining and is due $3 million. This should end the 37-year-old's career in the NHL.

 Michael Nylander-C - Capitals Dec. 14 - 10:58 am et

The Capitals assigned Michael Nylander to Grand Rapids of the AHL.
This is a significant move because Nylander's salary will now come off the cap, which frees up $4.875 million. The Capitals still have to pay his salary, which is $5.5 million this season, but it means they have significantly more flexibility with their roster if they want to add anyone down the stretch. Nylander still has one more year left on his contract after this season.

Michael Nylander cleared waivers for the second time this season.
Nylander is currently on loan to Dynamo Minsk in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. Under league rules, he must be placed on waivers every 30 days while on loan. Incredibly, Nylander still has another year left on his contract after this one with a cap hit of $4.875 million. Ouch.

Michael Nylander has been placed on waivers by the Washington Capitals.
Washington is just placing Nylander on waivers as a matter of course. He's already cleared waivers once and no team is interested in taking him and his $4.875 cap hit. The Capitals are still hoping that Nylander will accept a deal with a Russian squad, but it doesn't look like anything's imminent.

Michael Nylander is mulling over a potential move to the Russian KHL league.
He recently cleared waivers and can be assigned pretty much anywhere. It's believed the team interested is Dynamo Minsk. While his salary would come off the cap, Washington would still be on the hook to pay his $5.5 million salary for 2009-10 (he has a cap hit of $4.875 million). He still has one more year left on his deal after this season.
