Laurence Maroney got just one carry in the Patriots' Wild Card round loss, gaining two yards.
So much for the heavy workload Maroney predicted; Kevin Faulk was the Pats' primary back as they played from behind, operating almost strictly out of the shotgun. Maroney showed promise in stretches during the year, scoring a career-high nine TDs. Four fumbles lost cost him lots of playing time down the stretch, however, and his 3.9 yards-per-carry average was unimpressive. Maroney will return for his contract season in 2010 without a defined role.

Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears emphasized Thursday that the Patriots trust Laurence Maroney with the ball in his hands.
The coaches are working to cure Maroney of his fumblitis. We had tentatively been expecting Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor to handle early down work, but the truth is nobody knows what to expect with this backfield until Sunday's game starts. It certainly seems like Maroney is out of the doghouse -- if he was ever there in the first place.

Former Patriots linebacker and current ESPN analyst Tedi Bruschi speculated Tuesday that Laurence Maroney will not re-emerge as the lead back in the playoffs.
"I think the Patriots are going to go with Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor," Bruschi said. Maroney was believed to be in the doghouse after losing his third goal-line fumble of the season in Week 16. He was deactivated in Week 17, though Bill Belichick has been tight-lipped about the situation. We expect Morris and Taylor to carry the load on early-downs with Kevin Faulk handling passing situations.

Patriots declared RBs Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk, NT Vince Wilfork, CB Leigh Bodden, CB Terrence Wheatley, DE Ty Warren, OL Rich Ohrnberger, and OL Ryan Wendell inactive for Week 17.
Maroney and Faulk's inactivity might be an indication that the Pats aren't taking this game as seriously as they indicated all week, but Randy Moss and Tom Brady are both active. It's also worth noting that Maroney was benched last week for a first-possession fumble, so the punishment may have lingered into Week 17. Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor will handle the workload.

Laurence Maroney rushed five times for 22 yards in Week 16 against the Jaguars.
Maroney was used a ton as the Patriots marched down the field on their opening drive, but fumbled at the goal line and spent the rest of the game on the bench.
 Fred Taylor-RB - Patriots Dec. 22 - 1:31 pm et

Fred Taylor (ankle) deemed himself "50-50" for this week's matchup against his former team, the Jaguars.
"I had a pretty significant injury," said Taylor. "But I'm grateful that coach [Bill] Belichick didn't put me on IR." Laurence Maroney has a firm grip on the starting job right now. Expect Taylor's biggest impact to come during the NFL playoffs.
