Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Zach Duke and Paul Maholm are available, however they would need to be "overwhelmed" in order to trade one of them.
A few clubs have checked in on the pair of left-handers, said a source. And why not? Maholm, 27, is owed a very reasonable $11 million through 2011, while Duke, 26, figures to earn between $3-4 million in arbitration this winter. He is under team control through 2011.

Pirates president Frank Coonelly told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the Pirates have made less than $11 million the past two seasons.
The Pirates have invested all of that $11 million back into the organization, with $5.4 million going toward a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, $2 million toward the renovation of the Pirate City complex in Bradenton, Florida, and the recent purchase of a new Single-A affiliate to play in Bradenton. Whether we want to believe the figures or not, it appears the Bucs won't have much money to invest in free agents any time soon.

 Ryan Doumit-C - Pirates Nov. 14 - 2:20 pm et

According to FOXSports.com, the Brewers didn't want Ryan Doumit in exchange for J.J. Hardy.
They weren't interested in Matt Capps, either. Instead, the Brewers asked for one of two left-handed starters, Zach Duke or Paul Maholm. The Pirates declined, so the the Brewers went on to trade Hardy to the Twins in exchange for 23-year-old center fielder Carlos Gomez. It's clear that the Pirates are willing to swap Doumit in the right package. The 28-year-old catcher is set to earn $3.55 million in 2010 and $5.1 million in 2011, with club options for two additional seasons.

The Pirates have promoted Ray Searage to the position of pitching coach.
Searage carried the same role for the past two seasons at Triple-A Indianapolis and at several lower levels before then. The Pirates fired pitching coach Jeff Andrews in late September after his staff posted a 4.59 team ERA during the season. He was on the Bucs for just one year.

Paul Maholm revealed that his left knee has been hurting since Opening Day.
The injury happened when running the bases in the victory over St. Louis, and Maholm had to wrap the knee in ice after every start. "Was I 100 percent? No," the left-hander said. "I hurt it right off the bat, and it would come and go." It's a situation to watch in 2010, as the knee has been surgically repaired four times already. Maholm ended 8-9 with a 4.44 ERA in 31 starts, a disappointment after posting a 3.71 ERA with the same number of starts in 2008.

Thursday's game between the Pirates and Cubs was canceled due to rain with Pittsburgh leading 3-0 in the top of the fourth.
Stats from the contest, which saw Lastings Milledge hit a two-run homer, will not count. Maholm pitched three scoreless innings in what would have been his final appearance of the year. He may well have been on his way to a third straight quality start and a .500 record, but instead, he finishes up 8-9 with a 4.44 ERA. He was quite a disappointment after amassing a 0.87 ERA in his first three outings of the year.
