Jerry Hairston, who signed with the Padres over the weekend, hinted that the Yankees are waiting for Johnny Damon's price to go down.
"The Yankees didn't officially make an offer," Hairston told Jim Bowden and Joe Castellano during an appearance on SiriusXM's MLB Home Plate channel on Wednesday. "We'd been talking with them for about a month or two months and, they were kind of, I guess, waiting for a certain left fielder's price to come down. That's what I was gathering. I know Brian [Cashman]'s going to really love me for saying that." It's more of an opinion that a confirmation, and Cashman has since denied Hairston's assertion. Still, it's hard to argue against Hairston's logic while Cashman and agent Scott Boras wait for the other to blink.

Dan Hayes of the North County Times reports that the Padres have $5-7 million left to spend this offseason.
Aside from re-signing right-hander Kevin Correia, the Padres have mostly sat on the sidelines this winter, but new general manager Jed Hoyer said the club is "very" active among the remaining free agents. "There's no question there's good value out there," said Hoyer. "Certainly we have money to spend. We're going to spread it around to some of our needs. There's a lot of good players." Though he declined to comment on the players he is targeting, the Padres are reportedly in discussions with Jerry Hairston and Randy Winn. They have also considered catcher Brad Ausmus, but could have reservations due to his age, as he'll turn 41 in April.
