Kelly Thesier of MLB.com reports that Joe Nathan had bone chips removed from his elbow Tuesday.
Perhaps that explains Nathan's decreased velocity in the second half and playoff implosion, although he remained effective down the stretch by converting 13 straight saves with a 1.17 ERA and 19/5 K/BB ratio. He's expected to be fully healthy for spring training, but the 34-year-old closer will be worth keeping an eye on.

Joe Nathan blew a save in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday as the Twins lost Game 2 of the ALDS to the Yankees.
Nathan entered with a 3-1 lead and quickly allowed a two-run tying shot to Alex Rodriguez. It's the first multi-run homer Nathan has allowed all year and the Twins have now fallen to 0-2 in the series.

Pitching for the first time since a brutal loss on Wednesday, Joe Nathan struck out two in a perfect ninth Saturday against the Indians.
He earned his 36th save of the season. Nathan gave up two homers for the first time in more than six years in Wednesday's loss to the White Sox.

Joe Nathan gave up back-to-back homers and four runs in all to blow a ninth-inning lead and take a loss Wednesday against the White Sox.
Absolutely stunning. Nathan retired Mark Kotsay and Scott Podsednik to start the ninth, only to give up back-to-back homers to Gordon Beckham and Paul Konerko to tie the game. He then walked the next two batters he faced, and Matt Guerrier allowed both to score after taking over. It was the first time in four years than Nathan has been charged with four runs. It was the first time since May 26, 2003 that he had given up two homers. He was still pitching for the Giants then, and he allowed homers to Charles Johnson and Preston Wilson while pitching the fifth and sixth innings in relief of Kirk Rueter. This is just Nathan's latest shaky outing, and concern has to be growing. Still, there are no flashing red lights that suggest a breakdown is imminent.

Joe Nathan is unavailable for Saturday's game against the Royals.
No surprise here, since Nathan threw 53 pitches over two innings in Friday night's 5-4 win over the Royals. If a save opportunity presents itself, look for Ron Gardenhire to turn to Jose Mijares or Matt Guerrier.

Joe Nathan blew his first save since May 15 when he gave up two runs in the ninth Thursday against the Angels.
A walk, a HBP and two singles did him in, though neither single was hit hard. Better defense could have turned both into outs, though it positions, not the defenders themselves, that allowed the first hit to drop into shallow center (the outfield was playing to prevent doubles with a two-run lead). Nathan is 26-for-29 coverting saves this year. He hadn't even allowed a run since his previous blown save on May 15.
