The Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros re-signed Geoff Blum to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with a $1.65 million option for 2011.
The money is modest enough that it's not worth complaining about. Still, Blum is a very limited player now that he's 36. He's a weak option at shortstop or second base these days, and he doesn't hit enough to serve as a regular third baseman. If the Astros finally go get themselves a real third baseman, Blum won't do much good or harm in a backup role. If he's miscast as a starting third baseman against right-handers again, then Ed Wade will have had an awful winter. |
