The Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros re-signed Geoff Blum to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with a $1.65 million option for 2011.
The money is modest enough that it's not worth complaining about. Still, Blum is a very limited player now that he's 36. He's a weak option at shortstop or second base these days, and he doesn't hit enough to serve as a regular third baseman. If the Astros finally go get themselves a real third baseman, Blum won't do much good or harm in a backup role. If he's miscast as a starting third baseman against right-handers again, then Ed Wade will have had an awful winter.
 Lance Berkman-1B - Astros Sep. 15 - 4:33 pm et

Lance Berkman is out of Tuesday's lineup against the Reds with back and hip issues, reports Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
Geoff Blum will start at first base on Tuesday while the Big Puma is grounded. Berkman is considered day-to-day.

Geoff Blum, who had been out with a left shin contusion and a high ankle sprain, appeared as a pinch-hitter on Sunday.
He grounded into a double play and did not come in to play the field. He's still likely banged up enough not to start.
 Jeff Keppinger-3B - Astros Sep. 11 - 9:06 am et

Jeff Keppinger was scratched from Thursday's lineup after feeling discomfort in his back during pregame warm-ups.
It's the fifth game Keppinger has missed in a row. "I didn't think it would take this long," he said. "I thought maybe it would be two days, but we have a lot of guys here now. So instead of trying to push it and get out there it's better to take an extra day." Chris Johnson continues to benefit from the absence of Keppinger and Geoff Blum, who is out with a shin contusion.

Geoff Blum suffered a left shin contusion and a high mild ankle sprain in the fifth inning Wednesday.
Blum was rushed to The Methodist Hospital in Houston for X-rays, the results of which have not yet been revealed. Rookie Chris Johnson stepped in at third base and could draw a bunch of starts down the stretch. The 24-year-old Johnson hit .281 with 13 home runs and 42 RBI at Triple-A this season and will get a crack at the starting third base job in 2010.

 Chris Johnson-3B - Astros Sep. 9 - 1:54 pm et

Manager Cecil Cooper has informed veterans Geoff Blum and Jeff Keppinger of his plans to give playing time to Chris Johnson down the stretch.
With the addition of another name to the 3B mix in Houston, this situation is one to avoid outside of deeper NL-only leagues. The 24-year-old Johnson hit .281 with 13 homers and 42 RBI at Triple-A this season and has a chance to open 2010 as a regular.
