Bill Chastain of MLB.com doesn't think Jim Thome will join the Rays unless the club can unload Pat Burrell.
Chastain doesn't doubt that the two sides are talking, but finds it unlikely that the club will carry two players who can't contribute in the field. Burrell, who is on tap to make $9 million next season, made just one start in the outfield last season while Thome is strictly a designated hitter at this late stage of his career.

A source told David Lennon of New York Newsday that the Mets are not interested in Rays outfielder-designated hitter Pat Burrell.
They aren't interested in a straight-up swap, and they aren't interested in the proposed three-way trade rumored in recent weeks. That should put this rumor to rest for now. While Mets fans welcome this development, they're surely wondering how general manager Omar Minaya will be able to unload Luis Castillo this winter.

Updating a previous report, two Mets officials told Joel Sherman of the New York Post that there is nothing to a PhillyBurbs report claiming that Rays outfielder-designated hitter Pat Burrell was traded to the Mets.
Welcome to silly season. The Mets, Rays and Cubs have been linked in a potential three-way deal involving Burrell, Milton Bradley and Luis Castillo, but there is nothing to suggest a deal is close.

Tom Haines of PhillyBurbs.com reports that Rays outfielder-designated hitter Pat Burrell has been traded to the Mets.
Take this report with an extreme grain of salt. According to Haines, Burrell was traded to the Cubs, then swapped to the Mets. Obviously, this could be as part of the rumored three-way deal involving Milton Bradley and Luis Castillo, but this is the only outlet reporting the trade at the moment. Stay tuned.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that the Rays are growing less hopeful of trading Pat Burrell to the Cubs.
Burrell has one year and $9 million left on his contract while Milton Bradley is owed $9 million in 2010, $12 million in 2011 and a small amount of his $4 million signing bonus, so the Cubs should have more of a sense of urgency to get a deal done than the Rays. Still, Tampa remains the most likely destination for Bradley.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets would consider trading for Rays outfielder Pat Burrell.
The Mets wouldn't receive him directly from the Rays, however they would consider a Luis Castillo-for-Burrell swap if the Cubs are able to acquire him for Milton Bradley. The Mets have concerns about Burrell's makeup and defense, but he would at least provide some thump from the right side of the plate. Limited to just 122 games in 2009 due to neck problems, Burrell only played two games in the field. He hasn't played first base since his rookie season in 2000. Look for the Mets to seek a more well-rounded player without health concerns.
