The Cardinals and Rockies are among teams 'in the mix' for free agent second baseman Felipe Lopez.
We haven't heard a whole lot about Lopez this winter, despite him coming off one of the better seasons among the entire class of free agents. Lopez, who turns 30 in May, batted .310/.383/.427 with nine home runs, 57 RBI and 88 runs scored between the Diamondbacks and Brewers last season. With experience at second base, shortstop, third base and the outfield, he'd be a great fit on any number of teams.

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak indicated Friday morning that the Cardinals will rely on David Freese at third base next season.
"I'd say right now we're going with Freese," were the words used by Mozeliak on a morning radio show in the St. Louis area. The Cardinals were linked to infielders Miguel Tejada and Felipe Lopez at a few different points this winter but they just tendered a monstrous contract to Matt Holliday and aren't likely to bid on any remaining "big name" free agents. Freese hit .300/.369/.525 with 10 homers and 37 RBI last season at Triple-A Memphis.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals "are known to have interest" in free agent Felipe Lopez.
The Cardinals are currently focused on re-sighing Matt Holliday but are also forming Plan B options if he does not return to St. Louis. Lopez would be a part of that and could play left field for the Birds. The 29-year-old hit .310/.383/.427 this year with nine homers and 57 RBI in 604 at-bats.

The Brewers will not offer arbitration to any of their free agents.
This includes outfielder Mike Cameron, catcher Jason Kendall, 2B Felipe Lopez, starter Braden Looper and reliever David Weathers. Cameron, Looper and Lopez are already drawing interest on the open market.

During a season-ending press conference at Miller Park, GM Doug Melvin named Rickie Weeks as the Brewers' starting second baseman in 2010.
"We view Rickie as our second baseman at this point," said Melvin. And they should, since Felipe Lopez is an impending free-agent and the Brewers have significant holes to fill in their rotation. During Friday's press conference, Melvin announced that he hopes to acquire two starting pitchers during the offseason. With that in mind, he hopes that resigning Trevor Hoffman will convince some free agent starters to come to Milwaukee.

The Brewers expect Rickie Weeks to be their starting second baseman in 2010.
"We view Rickie as our second baseman at this point," GM Doug Melvin said, implying that free agent Felipe Lopez likely won't be back with the team next season. Weeks got off to a tremendous start with nine homers in his first 147 at-bats, and the oft-injured infielder remains a high-risk, high-upside proposition for 2010.
