Athletics re-signed DH Jack Cust to a one-year, $2.65 million contract.
The A's non-tendered Cust last month in order to avoid paying him a substantial raise via salary arbitration and lucked into signing him back at a lower salary than he made in 2009. The 30-year-old hit .240/.356/.417 with 25 homers and 70 RBI last season while earning just $2.8 million.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics will re-sign designated hitter Jack Cust.
According to Slusser, the new contract will be worth $2.5 million with additional incentives that could push the total to $3 million. The Athletics non-tendered Cust last month after he batted just .240/.356/.417 with 25 homers and 70 RBI. He figured to earn as much as $4 million in arbitration, so at least he's closer to the $2.8 million he made last season.

The Athletics are still interested in free agent designated hitter Jack Cust, reports Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com.
The Athletics haven't yet made an offer to Cust, but Urban gets the sense that they will be given an opportunity to match the most attractive offer on the table. The Giants, hungry for a lefty bat with pop, have also considered adding Cust, although they won't be able to hide his obvious defensive issues. Cust batted .240/.356/.417 with 25 homers and 70 RBI in 2009, earning $2.8 million. The A's non-tendered him last month.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Royals, Giants and Tigers are among the teams interested in free agent Jack Cust.
All three teams are looking for an inexpensive hitter and Cust should fit the bill. He batted .240/.356/.417 with 25 homers and 70 RBI in 2009, but is a poor defender and struck out 185 times in 513 at-bats this past season. Cust, who turns 31 in January, made $2.8 million in '09.

Athletics non-tendered designated hitter Jack Cust.
The A's liked Cust when he was cheap, but not so much at $4 million. Given that there may not be any teams that appreciate him quite like Oakland does, it's possible he could re-sign later on. If so, it'd probably be for about the same $2.8 million he made last season. At the moment, Jake Fox tops the team's depth chart at DH.

The San Jose Mercury News believes the A's are leaning towards non-tendering Jack Cust prior to the deadline next Saturday.
It seemed like Cust's second-half rebound would save him, but the A's are uncertain he's worth the $4 million or more he'd command in arbitration. It could come down to his willingness to accept less prior to next week's deadline. If he's willing to take something like a 10 percent raise from his $2.8 million salary in 2009, then the A's would be more likely to bring him back.
