According to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies are showing interest in recently non-tendered reliever Mike MacDougal.
The Phillies are exploring all options for insurance behind current closer Brad Lidge. MacDougal converted 20 of 21 save chances for the Nationals in 2009 but was non-tendered because the club did not want to pay him a substantial raise through the salary arbitration process. The 32-year-old right-hander earned $2.65 million in '09 and might have earned up to $6 million for '10. He finished the '09 season with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.52 WHIP and 30/30 K/BB.

Nationals non-tendered RHP Mike MacDougal.
MacDougal saved 20 games in 21 chances for the Nationals and posted a 3.60 ERA in 50 innings, but he made $2.65 million under the terms of his old deal with the White Sox and the Nats didn't want to chance him getting a substantial raise in arbitration. If he doesn't like what he sees on the open market, it'd be no surprise to see him re-sign with Washington later.

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark believes the Nationals may non-tender Mike MacDougal.
The Nationals acquired Brian Bruney from the Yankees on Monday and he has a desire to serve as the club's ninth-inning man. MacDougal posted a 3.60 ERA and 20 saves in 21 opportunities this past season, but a 1.52 WHIP and 30/30 K/BB hints that he may not enjoy that kind of success again.

Recently-acquired reliever Brian Bruney would like the opportunity to close for the Nationals.
"I love closing ballgames," Bruney said. "There's nothing better than that in my opinion. I felt like New York was a good stepping stone with lots of pressure-filled situations. But to be honest, I had talked to my agent and I said, 'I can't wait to get to the place where I can try and close somewhere." The Nationals have to consider the request, as their current closer is highly-erratic Mike MacDougal. Manager Jim Riggelman said: "As we sit here right now, it's undetermined who would be our closer. I think that's a healthy situation, get some competition out there and maybe the hot hand takes it. ... I think this gives us another option." The two will battle at spring training.

Mike MacDougal underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right hip on Tuesday.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon in Colorado. MacDougal is slated to begin a throwing program in six to eight weeks and should be ready by spring training. The righty found success with the Nationals, posting a 3.60 ERA and 20 saves in 21 opportunities, however his 1.52 WHIP and 30/30 K/BB ratio indicates it was likely built on a house of cards. If the Nats choose to bring him back, he would cost over $3 million in arbitration.

Mike MacDougal retired five of the six batters he faced to protect a one-run lead and earn a save Thursday against the Cubs.
If MacDougal keeps this up, the Nationals will have to consider bringing him back in 2010, even though he'd likely cost around $3 million in arbitration. He has a 1.98 ERA in 36 1/3 innings since joining the team. In August, he's allowed five hits in 13 scoreless innings and picked up eight saves in as many chances.
