Oliver Perez threw a successful side session on the final day of the team's mini camp in St. Lucie.
Pitching coach Dan Warthen was impressed with Perez's self-confidence and conditioning. The two are working on having Perez put weight on his landing leg in a way to avoid his trademark spin move when he loses control of the pitch and head. The Mets are hopeful the 28 year old can bounce back from a disastrous 2009 campaign and be worth his three-year, $36 million contract he inked prior to last season.

Oliver Perez (knee) was "fired up" after throwing his first bullpen session of 2010 on Tuesday, according to SNY's Kevin Burkhardt.
Both Burkhardt and Newsday's Ken Davidoff observed that Perez threw "hard." He had a disaster of a season in 2009, finishing with a 6.82 ERA and a 1.92 WHIP in 14 starts before undergoing knee surgery in September. The Mets are hoping he'll turn things around now that he's healthy.

Oliver Perez (knee) declared himself fit during an appearance at the Mets' mini camp in Port St. Lucie on Monday, reports Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News.
"Right now I don't feel anything," said Perez. "I think that's why I'm really happy." Perez underwent surgery underwent to remove scar tissue from his right knee in September. This completed a disastrous season in which he posted a 6.82 ERA and 1.92 WHIP in 14 starts. By the team's request, the 28-year-old southpaw trained all winter at Fischer Sports in Arizona, the facility known for training Randy Johnson. We'll soon see if he'll ever come close to matching the heavy price tag on his back.

Oliver Perez (knee) has been training this offseason at the Athletes Performance Institute in Arizona.
It's essentially a comprehensive boot-camp for athletes, ranging from a focus on nutrition to media training. After a disastrous 2009 season, Perez needs all the help he can get. "I have to follow my routine, because the team is coming to check me out soon, and I want to report to Spring Training in February," Perez told Noroeste, an online Mexican newspaper. "I want to be healthy, because it’s not easy coming from surgery, and having been through that was very difficult; but it is what it is, I have to think positive for 2010." The Mets owe Perez $24 million over the next two seasons.
