According to the Boston Globe, Padres general manager Jed Hoyer said trading Adrian Gonzalez is not a foregone conclusion.
"The team’s position with regard to Adrian has not changed at all," Hoyer wrote in an email. "We are excited to have him under contract for the next two seasons. He is a great player who fits our city, team, and payroll remarkably well. We have had, and will continue to have, dialogue with Adrian’s representatives about keeping him in San Diego long-term. It is still early in that process and attempting to draw conclusions in the middle of any negotiation is an inexact science." Hoyer assessment is certainly more optimistic than that of team CEO Jeff Moorad, who said on Wednesday that "early signals" are that Gonzalez will be too rich for the Padres.

Adrian Gonzalez's agent John Boggs told Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune that the Padres can't afford to sign his client to a long-term contract.
"I don’t ever want to speak for ownership because I have no knowledge of what they have and what they don’t," Boggs said. "(But) the feeling we’re getting is more than likely (the Padres) are going to have to trade Adrian Gonzalez because (they) can’t afford him." Padres CEO Jeff Moorad didn't exactly deny this claim, saying "the early signals indicate his cost will be greater than our ability to pay." Gonzalez is owed a very reasonable $4.75 million with a $5.5 million club option for 2011, so there's no immediate pressure to pursue a trade. Conventional wisdom is that the Padres will wait until mid-season like the Rangers did with Mark Teixeira.

Dan Hayes of the North County Times reports that the Padres have $5-7 million left to spend this offseason.
Aside from re-signing right-hander Kevin Correia, the Padres have mostly sat on the sidelines this winter, but new general manager Jed Hoyer said the club is "very" active among the remaining free agents. "There's no question there's good value out there," said Hoyer. "Certainly we have money to spend. We're going to spread it around to some of our needs. There's a lot of good players." Though he declined to comment on the players he is targeting, the Padres are reportedly in discussions with Jerry Hairston and Randy Winn. They have also considered catcher Brad Ausmus, but could have reservations due to his age, as he'll turn 41 in April.

Padres general manager Jed Hoyer told Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe that he isn't looking to trade first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.
"A number of teams have inquired about him. I think we’re obviously willing to listen on anything, but he’s a great player, he fits our team, he fits our payroll structure very well," said Hoyer. "So he’s certainly not a player we’re looking to move. I think that’s been the way we’ve addressed it all winter. Teams have inquired, but we’ve certainly said the same thing over and over: He’s not a player we’re looking to move." The 27-year-old Gonzalez has been a popular name in trade rumors this offseason, especially in Boston, but it may serve Hoyer to hold out to find a Mark Teixeira-like return around the trade deadline. Gonzalez is a bargain over the next two seasons, owed $4.75 million in 2010 with a $5.5 million club option for 2011.

Peter Gammons told WEEI that the Padres and Red Sox have not exchanged names in a potential Adrian Gonzalez trade.
Gammons goes on to say he doesn't see a trade happening before July 1. "They have to think about selling tickets in San Diego," said Gammons. The 27-year old Gonzalez cranked 40 home runs in 2009 and is only owed $4.75 million in 2010. He also has a $5.5 million club option for 2011.

Multiple sources informed Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald that the odds of Adrian Gonzalez landing with the Red Sox this winter are "remote."
It's not surprising to hear. Gonzalez, 27, is a perfect fit in San Diego, where the lineup lacks power and money is tight. He posted a .958 OPS and 40 home runs in '09 while earning just $3 million. He's only owed $4.75 million in 2010 and carries a bargain $5.5 million club option for 2011.
