Cardinals signed OF Matt Holliday to a seven-year, $120 million contract.
In a symbolic gesture, Holliday will now wear the No. 7 on his back. The contract is the biggest of the offseason and the richest in Cardinals' history, surpassing the seven-year, $100 million extension Albert Pujols signed in 2004. Holliday will also receive a full no-trade clause and a vesting option for 2017 if he finishes in the Top-10 of the NL MVP voting in 2016. Holliday struggled during the NLDS, infamously fumbling a flyball in Game 2, but he was the perfect compliment to Pujols upon joining the team in July, batting .353 with 13 homers and 55 RBI in 235 at-bats as the Cardinals reclaimed the NL Central for the first time since 2006. With Holliday locked up for the long-term, hopefully Pujols will follow. |
