MLB.com beat writer Joe Frisaro doesn't believe the Marlins are still shopping second baseman Dan Uggla.
The Miami Herald's Clark Spencer reported Monday that Uggla was still alive on the traing block. From what Frisaro has gathered, though, talks haven't been serious since the Winter Meetings in early December. "The fact the Marlins are bringing Uggla back at $7.8 million means he fits into their 2010 budget," writes Frisaro. "So there is no mandate to move him."

According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Marlins are still shopping second baseman Dan Uggla "and will continue to do so."
The two sides avoided arbitration Monday by agreeing to a one-year, $7.8 million contract but the Marlins are going to listen to offers for their man right up into spring training. Uggla, 29, hit .243/.354/.459 with 31 homers and 90 RBI last year and has been courted this winter by close to a dozen teams.

The Marlins and 2B Dan Uggla avoided arbitration Monday by agreeing to a one-year, $7.8 million contract.
It's a nice raise from the $5.35 million that Uggla earned in 2009. The 29-year-old hit .243/.354/.459 last year with 31 homers and 90 RBI, and will again serve as the Marlins' starting second baseman in 2010.

The Marlins might have "extra incentive" to keep Dan Uggla next season or offer Josh Johnson a contract extension after the club was chided by Major League Baseball and the players' union for not spending revenue sharing money on player salaries, according to the Miami Herald's Clark Spencer.
MLBPA Executive Director Michael Weiner said in a statement: "...the Marlins have assured the Union and the Commissioner’s Office that they plan to use such proceeds to increase player payroll annually as they move toward the opening of their new ballpark." Spencer speculates that the Marlins will now spend more than the previously-reported $40 million payroll. That number could jump to $50 million, which would allow them to spend the estimated $7 million that it will take to keep Uggla via arbitration. Johnson has been seeking a four-year extension, a contract that would obviously be easier to grant with increased payroll flexibility.

The Marlins are in contract discussions with second baseman Dan Uggla.
Uggla is in his second year of arbitration. He made $5.35 million last season and is expected to receive a salary in excess of $7 million in 2010 -- a big chunk of Florida's projected $40 million payroll. The Marlins have spoken to several teams about the 29-year-old, including the Orioles, Giants and Braves, but they have yet to find a suitable match.

 Jorge Cantu-1B - Marlins Jan. 7 - 9:35 am et

The Marlins have no intention of trading Jorge Cantu in an effort to save money, reports Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
This squashes a report from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that the Fish may "start taking calls" on Cantu if they can't find a taker for Dan Uggla. Cantu, who turns 28 later this month, earned $3.5 million last season and figures to take home nearly $5 million in arbitration this winter.
